Balblair Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is proud to announce that its 1989 vintage has been crowned the winner of this year's Spirit of Whisky Fringe award at the prestigious whisky event held on 9 and 10 August at Mansfield Traquair in Edinburgh.

Organised by Royal Mile Whiskies, the multi-award winning dram was sampled and tasted by around 1,000 visitors at this year's sell-out festival in Edinburgh, who rated over 250 spirits and voted Balblair 1989 as their favourite.

The malt will now be displayed for the next 12 months in the display cabinet at Royal Mile Whiskies in Edinburgh, with its name being engraved on the Spirit of the Fringe silver trophy coaster. In addition, Balblair 1989, which was released in early 2007, will have a continuous profile on the homepage of royalmilewhiskies.com.

Says Keir Sword, Managing Director of Royal Mile Whiskies: 'Inver House Distillers has put considerable effort into lifting the focus on Balblair and it is good to see their focus on quality being rewarded. We've long been aware of the quality of whisky that the distillery can produce and the 1989 vintage is indeed a worthy Spirit of Whisky Fringe. All at Balblair can take particular pride in this award, as it is one of the few whisky awards voted for by consumers.'

Balblair Brand Manager Margaret Mary Clarke commented: 'We are absolutely delighted that Balblair 1989 has been voted Spirit of the Fringe 2008, especially considering the number and high calibre of spirits available over the weekend. Congratulations go to our great team at the Balblair distillery in Edderton who are devoted to producing our range of excellent malt whiskies.'

Balblair Highland Single Malt Scotch whisky, which is part of the Inver House Distillers portfolio, has won a multitude of awards this year including Gold and Bronze at the recent International Spirits Challenge 2008, Gold: Best in Class at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2008 and two Gold Awards at the Scotch Whisky Masters 2008. Furthermore, Balblair contributed significantly to Inver House Distillers' highest accolade so far, the International Distiller of the Year award at this year's Icons of Whisky.
