I'd like to throw a "going away" party for a friend that is taking a job in Japan. I'd like to have it at a pub, but I don't know if this is possible. What's everyone's experience with this been?

Do you have a place or two in mind? If so, start by calling the manager and asking them if they do private parties. Many places will let you rent out a room or so for a fee.

You could also have your party at someone's home or other location and hire bartenders for the night.
