The Smoking Ban has now been in place for just over two months, and how is it going?

Apart from the odd rebel or occasional negligence, the ban seems to be well enforced and accepted relatively well by the public. Due to an inclement (what a great word) summer, foot traffic in bars has been lower than usual which has made actual measurement more tricky. Both Punch Taverns and JD Wetherspoon have both said that the smoking bans haven't affected profits or sales. Mitchells & Butler group reported in September 2006 that drink sales fell only 1%, whereas food sales rose by 11%, so perhaps this may actually help pubs and bars - particularly in the winter months?

Cancer research UK has gone as far as saying they believe the smoking ban would encourage more families to go out; an opinion backed up by their Great Indoors campaign.

On the flipside, there still seems to be confusion in the industry over where people can and can't smoke; enclosed and substantially enclosed premises, multi-lingual signage, how far away smokers have to be from the venue. It seems that policing of such issues is still in it's softly-softly stage, though we can't be sure when this will change, and non-conforming venues will get stung, purely to "educate" the marketplace.

So the real question now is has it made a difference to staff and patrons? I guess only time will tell. Though now Smirting has been introduced to the English, how can it be bad?

How has the smoking ban made a difference to you?

Guest According to a survey of 5,000 diners by the restaurant guide Zagat, 93% were in favour of the smoking ban... not surprisingly really. I smoke occassionally but can't stand other people smoking around me when i'm eating out. Smoking ban is GREAT!

Guest I don't smoke (not for several years anyway). However, I haven't smoked so much for years since the smoking ban took effect! If you want to be outside taking a breath of "fresh air" in the sunshine in the pub garden, you are forced to sit with all the smokers. Also, when it comes to pub gardens or outside smoking space, in my experience smokers now consider non smokers to be taking up valuable space that should only be available to smokers. This is particularly true during sporting occasions such as the rubgy world cup. My husband smokes but I don't. Should I have been inside whilst he stayed outside with his mates?

I think it's interesting that while drink sales went down, food sales increased since the ban. Does this mean that people are eating more and drinking the same? I always heard smoking tampts down the appetite....

I agree that smoking bans are great. My sister is asthmatic, and even if she is outside, sitting around smokers can and has caused her to have asthma attacks; once she ended up in the hospital. She asked the doctor if she could send the smoker that sat by her the hospital bill.

This article is a perfect example from http://www.iht.com/articles/1998/03/16/topics.t_15.php
of the ridiculousness that things like this create:

"AMERICAN TOPICS : California Bar Owner Becomes Butt Of the State's No-Smoking Statute

By Brian Knowlton Published: MONDAY, MARCH 16, 1998

A bar owner in Auburn, California, has been convicted of two infractions for allowing patrons to light up in violation of the new state anti-smoking law. It was apparently the first such trial under the law that bans smoking in more than 35,000 bars and casinos. The owner, Bill Ostrander, was fined a total of $300

Mr. Ostrander said he had posted signs about the law and told patrons not to smoke, but he could not force them to stop. "It's not my job," he said.

People attending the trial hooted when police testified that, at one point, four patrol cars were parked outside Mr. Ostrander's bar to investigate smoking complaints."

What is an owner supposed to do in cases like these, where the customers refuse to obey the laws? Shouldn't they be the ones getting the tickets?
