According to surveys done by Teletext holidays, they say that one in three of us mentally switch off from the 14th of December. That's nearly 9million pople! Furthermore, one in two of us think it's acceptable to come into work with a hangover during the silly season. Finally, one in three (I wonder if they're the same ones as mentioned earlier?) admit to making up meetings so they can duck out and pick up presents for their families.

There's a reason that they call this silly season. Whether it's granny going a bit mad, beating off opposition while trying to pick up a bargain paid of socks on Oxford St, the office worker who stumbles in at half ten wearing last nights clothes or the group of drunken revellers trying desperately to have a "legendary" new years party despite being kicked out of bars into the freezing night, we all seem to go a little mad at this time. A few too many drinks, a little too much enthusiasm, or a few forgotten morals can lead to disaster.

On the flipside, there's also a wealth of fun to be had enjoying the festivities with friends and family. And remember - despite your race, religion, colour or creed - we could all do with a little peace on earth and goodwill to man. Even if it just starts with the month of December.
