Jacky, I understand your outrage as well as the point you are making, but I think it's fair to point out that the medal is given for a high quality wine, and that the point of the article is to show that there are affordable fine wines out there, not for having the cheapest wine on the market.

Statistics from Sheffield University recently showed that the setting of a minimum price for alcohol of 50p would save 3,400 lives per year and involve the moderate drinker paying only £12 per annum more for their drinks.

Leslie,

Thank you for the clarification. Sometimes I really get going and don't see the gaps.

Ditto. Number 3 on Cracknell's top tips is especially important.

OK, I'm going to climb up on the soapbox here. All of the social programs in the world aren't going to stop this phenomena; words just aren't potent enough. Here's what I think.

These young people that are drinking like this should have to live with and watch someone die from cirrhosis of the liver. They should have to watch as the eyes and skin of the person yellow from jaundice. They should watch as at first their feet, legs, and hands begin to swell from fluid retention. They should have to be there as the belly begins to swell until it looks as if they are ten months pregnant. They should wake up in the middle of the night with the person as they cough up blood; help them to the bathroom when they know they can't make it in time. And they should be there with them as they lay on their death bed; as their lungs finally fill completely with the fluid their liver cannot process properly and for which their body has run out of expanding storage places. They should watch closely the faraway look in their yellow eyes as the individual prepares to pass from this world to whatever lies beyond, and feel the chill that seeps over the body when life has left it; observe the blue twinge that seeps into the fingernails and lips.

They should stay afterward to console the family; to plan the funeral; to explain to others why this person died (perhaps at a very young age) without embarrassment or shame. To have to use the word "alcoholic" in reference to that human being and watch the look that, even though the one being spoken to, the one who asked the question in the first place, tries to keep the look of disgust out of the lines of their face and the liquid of their eyes, but always fails.

Then, once these hot-shot heavy drinkers have experienced first-hand the reality of a death from alcohol-related liver failure, someone should take them to their favorite pub or bar, tell them to drink up, and then walk away from them forever. Because there is no hope.

I'm not sure who you are because you didn't sign your name, but I would like to say that I am sorry for your loss.
